Sunday, Jun 7, 2009 2009 WSOP - Ville Wahlbeck Wins Event 12 - $10,000 World Championship Mixed Event

The prestigious $10,000 World Championship Mixed Event finished Saturday. The tournament was won by Finland's Ville Wahlbeck, who finished third in the Seven-Card Stud World Championship just a few days ago.

Event 12 was undoubtedly one of the toughest tournaments so far in the 2009 WSOP. The final table was comprised of more former WSOP gold bracelet winners than any other tournament.  Even most of the non-WSOP gold bracelet winners were well-known names to poker fans.

The four former winners included - Todd Brunson (1 win), David Chiu (4 wins), Huck Seed (4 wins), and Mike Wattel (1 win).

Ville Wahlbeck, a 33-year-old poker pro from Helsinki, Finland, defeated them all and took home the $492,384 first prize. Winning his first bracelet was, however, more important than the money.

"This is every poker player's dream.  I have been dreaming about this ever since I started playing poker," Wahlbeck said after the tournament.

Two World Championship events have been played so far this year, and Wahlbeck has finished in the top-three in both of them.

"Playing in the Stud event and coming in third was great for me. Of course, I wanted to win.  To come back and to win this event after that happened - it's a dream come true."

Despite his great success, Wahlbeck is considering an early retirement from poker.

"I have been playing professional poker for about six years now. This is such an exhausting profession.  I do not know if I want to keep on doing this."
