Tuesday, Jun 2, 2009 Tom McEvoy Wins WSOP Champions Invitational
Who is the champion of WSOP champions? The answer is Tom McEvoy, who defeated 19 other WSOP Main Event winners to claim the WSOP Champions Invitational title.
No prize money or bracelet was involved in the event - the first prize was a 1970 Corvette Stingray - but that didn't matter to McEvoy, who in addition to his 1983 Main Event victory has won three more bracelets.
"I told all my friends that I wanted to win this tournament more than anyone else," McEvoy stated in a post-tournament interview. "I think I have been losing some respect because I have not won in some time, and I wanted this to regain that respect."
"This is the toughest field I have ever played against," he added.
McEvoy was also awarded the first-ever "Binion Cup," named in honor of the Binion Family, who founded the WSOP forty years ago.
Runner-up Robert Varkonyi was pleased with his performance.
"This was a great experience - such a great honor to play with the champions. I had a lot of fun. I hope we do it again sometime. I would like to get another shot," Varkonyi said.
